Description

Northwoods Concertante was commissioned by the Shorewood Bands Parents Association for the Intermediate School Bands. It was premiered in March, 2011, by the Gaudete Brass Quintet and Shorewood Intermediate Bands.

The Quintet parts have been conceived as Grade III in difficulty, playable by most high school-level brass players. The balance between quintet and band is, of course, critical to an effective performance of the work. Strict adherence to articulation, particularly the eighth-note pattern as seen in measure 3 in the first movement, is important. In Movement II, all quarter notes that are not slurred are staccato. The tempo for the second movement should not exceed dotted quarter note equals 120.
