Partita Antico for Brass Quintet

Description

Inspired by the baroque keyboard suites of J.S. Bach, Partita Antico consists of the customary allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue plus the inclusion of two optional dances, a minuet and rigaudon. The work is heavily reliant on most of the compositional techniques that came to be associated with this period of music history. Harmonically and structurally, the work is decidedly baroque in character. Melodically, the work makes frequent use of such devices as sequence, imitation and hemiola. The one aspect of the work which is not typical of the period is the composer’s use of asymmetric meters and rhythms. (The Courante, for example, is in 7/8 meter; meters change in the Allemande and Sarabande; the traditional triple meter of the minuet is now replaced by 5/8, etc.) It is the composer’s hope that the use of these special rhythmic techniques give “new life” to a musical form which is still viable.
