Scherzo for Brass Quintet
Description
Scherzo was written in 1962 during the composer’s senior year in college at the University of New Mexico. The piece was first performed by a faculty group teaching at a UNM summer music camp, the trombonist of which was the composer. It was published and recorded a short time later and, through no fault of the composer, has become a part of the standard brass literature. Its simple ternary design, catchy melodic ideas and asymmetric rhythms have become a harbinger of Cheetham’s later works, many of which have been for brass.
