Concertino for Brass Quintet & Band

Description

Concertino was commissioned in 2000 by the faculty brass quintet (now known as the “Hoodlebug Brass”) at The Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The work was premiered by that group and the IUP Concert Band, Jack Stamp, conductor, at the PMEA Conference in Harrisburg, PA in 2000.

Classic sonata form provides the structural format for Movement 1. It opens with a fanfare-like motive which quickly ascends through the brass. The first theme of the movement (a whimsical repeated-note figure) is first stated in the quintet against a sandpaper block rhythmic accompaniment. The second theme (folk-like in character with constantly changing meters) is presented first in the quintet, and then by the band. Following a modulatory development section, the opening fanfare returns, signaling the recapitulation of themes 1 and 2.

The second movement is a slow 5-part rondo. It opens with a lyrical theme stated in the quintet alone; each time the theme appears, it is presented in a slightly different guise. This short movement leads without pause to the final movement of the work – a boisterous rondo in 6/8 time. According to some, this movement is reminiscent of the popular “Off to See the Wizard” from the Wizard of Oz.

This is the version for Brass Quintet and Concert Band and includes a full score and set of parts.
