Sonata for Trumpet and Marimba
Description
Sonata for Trumpet and Marimba was written for the composer’s younger son, Dr. Andrew Cheetham. Written in early 2006, it was premiered by Andrew at an Oklahoma State University faculty recital during the fall of that year.
The piece is written in three movements. Movement one is based on two ideas: a syncopated march-like theme in 6/8 supported by harmonies which are often built in fourths, and a contrasting lyric theme. Structurally, this movement adheres to the classic sonata form. Movement two is a recitative in which the lines are fluid and non-metrical as the trumpet declaims various ideas over sustained chords in the marimba. Rondo forms the basis for the third movement which relies heavily on a double-tongued motive at the outset followed by a simple, child-like tune with a mocking, but playful, character shared by trumpet and marimba.
