SATB (A cappella)
“Ding, Dong Merrily on High.” The melody is a secular French dance tune which first appeared in the Orchesographie, a book of dances written by Johan Tabourot (1519-1593). The English lyrics were written in the early 20th century by poet George R. Woodward (1848-1934). Its cheerful tune, use of musical sequence (repetition of a musical phrase at a different pitch level), and the onomatopoeia of the text (“ding dong” conveys the sound of bells) have made it one of the most endearing carols of all time.
