SATB (A cappella)
“Coventry Carol.” This is an English carol which survived from the Coventry play, “The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors” (medieval mystery play based on stories from the Bible), dating back to 1592. It is likely that these Coventry plays were witnessed by such luminaries as Margaret (Queen of Henry VI), Richard III and Henry VII during the early to middle part of the 15th century. Particularly poignant in this carol is the reference to Herod and his soldiers slaughtering innocent male children of Bethlehem in the attempt to kill the newborn King of Jews.
